OYO @ The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

In recognition of the Youth Orchestra’s outstanding performance at Symphony Hall in July last year, we were delighted to be awarded with one of Music for Youth’s ‘MfY Connects Partnership Awards’.  In our case, the prize was a day of workshops and coaching at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC).

The plan for the day is as follows:

  • 07.15 – OYO meet at the Lyceum then depart for Birmingham by coach
  • 09.30 – Arrive at Birmingham
  • 10.00 – Workshops on new repertoire with RBC tutors and 18 RBC students ‘side-by-side’
  • 12.00 – Lunch (provided by RBC)
  • 12.45 – Workshops continue
  •  15.00 – Studio quality recording of the final performance
  • 16.00 – Depart for Oldham
  • 18.00 – Arrive at Lyceum

The repertoire for the day has been specially chosen to further develop the ‘Session Orchestra’ feel of the performance that we gave in Birmingham last year and therefore includes parts for a saxophone section as well as rhythm instrumentation, players for which will be recruited from other OMC groups for this special event.  The repertoire will definitely include arrangements of ELO’s ‘Mr. Blue Sky, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and Robert Miles’ ‘Children’ as well as a possible fourth piece.

Relevant students should have already been notified by email or letter and should return their consent form by Friday 3rd May.
